Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
